Participants

Jack Evans (french horn)
Jack is 15 and attends Wymondham College in Norfolk. Jack has been playing horn for around 5 years. He can't quite remember why he started playing horn, but is now very glad he did. He has joined just about every school music club he could and also plays for Norfolk County Youth Orchestra and Wymondham Symphony Orchestra. Jack is keen on pretty much any piece of music and takes any opportunity to do it - from classical to jazz, musical theatre to indie!

Harry Evans (trumpet)
Harry started playing the trumpet in 2006 and has recently achieved Grade 7 with Distinction. Over the past 18 months Harry has been fortunate enough to have attended a series of workshops with the National Youth Jazz Collective and the Norfolk Music Service, which lit the flames of his passion for Jazz. Harry plays for many school ensembles, Norfolk County Youth Orchestra and several local orchestras and bands.

Andrew Farnden (clarinet)
As well as playing clarinet Andrew also plays saxophone and piano. He attends Kimbolton School and his clarinet teacher is Joy Farrell. At school Andrew is involved in various music ensembles including the choir, clarinet choir, swing band and world music. Outside of school Andrew plays with the Northampton County Training Orchestra and the National Children's Orchestra and has played in well known venues including the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London and Symphony Hall Birmingham. He is really excited about being an Aldeburgh Young Musician!

Matthew Farthing (drum kit)
Matt is 14 and attends Kesgrave High School. He has been playing the drum kit for six years and plays with his school’s Jazz Band and Percussion Group. He cites drummers Dave Weckl, Neil Peart and Vinnie Colaiuta, Aaron Spears and Buddy Rich as his main inspirations. He also plays piano and violin, the latter with his school’s Chamber Orchestra and Junior Strings.

Luke Fitzgerald (composer)
Luke was born in 1997 and began learning the piano aged five, later learning the trumpet and the trombone. He plays trombone with his school’s wind and jazz bands, as well as singing with the Jesus College Choir in Cambridge. He enjoys composing and arranging, and gained a highly commended prize in the Cambridge Young Composer of the Year competition in 2009.

Joe Gibbings (guitar)
Joe got his first guitar when he was 5 years old, starting lessons at the age of 7. Joe also plays drums, bass guitar and the ukelele. Joe is in a band with some friends and together they gig and write their own material. They have taken part in showcases including "Permission to Rock" at Ipswich Corn Exchange in 2009 and "Star for a Night" at Ipswich Regent in 2010. Joe says "being an Aldeburgh Young Musician is an amazing chance for me. I know I will learn so much and be inspired from working with the other young musicians....I don't think I'll ever stop playing the guitar, and music is without a doubt my life."

AYM Exchanging Worlds Ensemble

The Aldeburgh World Orchestra Project

The AWO project brings emerging professional musicians from all over the world to Suffolk; to inspire, engage and perform; raising ambition and celebrating talent on a local to international level, as part of the London Cultural Olympiad in 2012

AYM Exchanging Worlds Ensemble

As part of Exchanging Worlds we will also establish a creative performance ensemble made up of exceptional young musical talent (under 18's) through Aldeburgh Young Musicians (AYM). This commissioning ensemble will be cross cultural and cross genre in content. Through collaborative working and the exchange of global musical conversations, new works will be created for performance at Snape Maltings and regional touring.

Alongside the ensemble AYM Composers will compose a fanfare for members of Aldeburgh World Orchestra, experiment with remote interactivity and take advantage of AWO mentoring opportunities. Finally, two young musicians will join AWO.

Exchanging worlds has been funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games across the UK.
