Director of Les Violons du Roy, Canada's top baroque ensemble, Conductor Bernard Labadie makes his Aldeburgh debut with the Britten–Pears Orchestra's modern players, giving a particular period feel to Mozart's choral masterpiece. Two outstanding soloists, regular string tutors of the orchestra Markus Däunert and Isabel Charisius, lead the orchestra's strings in the virtuosic Sinfonia Concertante.

Vladimir Jurowski returns with his London Philharmonic wind, brass and percussion players for a Residency and a Festival concert. Ten wind and brass players from the BPO will work for three days on their own chamber music repertoire, performing it in the Aldeburgh Festival, and then play side-by-side with LPO musicians in rehearsals. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from some of the UK's top orchestral players and one of our hottest conducting talents.

Strings specialist Antonello Manacorda returns to the BPO after their dazzling concert together in the 2008 Aldeburgh Festival. This programme features a combination of Classical and early modern repertoire, and will focus on stylistic contrasts, including Haydn's magnificent Symphony No.90 in his anniversary year, and Ravel's elegant, witty ballet suite.

Bach St Matthew Passion

Japanese Bach specialist Masaaki Suzuki returns to prepare a performance of this Baroque masterpiece, for the 2009 Aldeburgh Festival. Rehearsals for the St Matthew Passion will be accompanied by vocal masterclasses given by internationally acclaimed counter tenor Michael Chance, featuring Bach and baroque repertoire.

Expenses are covered for orchestra members (orchestra from 24 June 2009).

Alumni from the Britten–Pears composition courses read like a who's who of composition from the last 20 years, including such names as Thomas Adès and Julian Anderson. A recent alumna, Anna Meredith, was commissioned for the 2008 Last Night of the Proms.

A group of 20 instrumentalists join six young composers to work on ensemble masterpieces of the 20th and 21st centuries, and to provide a live performance tool for the composers to try out their ideas, leading to a final concert where all the newly written works will be showcased.

Pianist Malcolm Martineau is one of the world's great exponents of the Lieder repertoire, and here he concentrates on the masterpieces of Robert Schumann.

Susan Youens is a specialist in the poetry of Lieder, having published frequently on the subject – she will lecture during the course on this fascinating area of repertoire.

Our annual string quartet academy goes from strength to strength, with alumni successes in a host of international competitions.

Isabel Charisius was until recently violist with the Alban Berg Quartet, and also teaches at Luzern Hochschule für Musik, and in Cologne and Amsterdam. Sebastian Hamann has an international career as a soloist and chamber musician, and teaches violin and chamber music in Luzern and Basel. David Dolan is a specialist in classical improvisation.

Britten's powerful and disturbing chamber opera is given a new production as part of the opening season of Aldeburgh Music's new rehearsal and performance facilities.

Our new venue, the Britten Studio will provide the inspiration for a minimalist new production by the theatre director Neil Bartlett, who directed The Rake's Progress for the Aldeburgh Festival in 2006.

Orchestra rehearsals take place from 15 October 2009.

THE BPO MUSICIANS' COMPANY CONDUCTOR'S BURSARY
June and August 2009

The Britten–Pears Orchestra is recruiting an Assistant Conductor to take part in orchestral courses.

An assistant will be selected by video/DVD audition to take part in the June and August courses in 2009. The successful candidate will have the opportunity of observing and assisting at rehearsals and sectionals, and will benefit from working on a wide variety of repertoire with a team of renowned and experienced conductors.
