3. Studio 1
The centrepiece is a large new studio, bigger
than the main concert hall stage, and ideal for
orchestral rehearsals. It is designed to have an
excellent and flexible acoustic, with a high level
of sound insulation for recording. When not
being used for rehearsals, it can serve as a
340-seat venue.

4. Jerwood Kiln Studio
The renovation of this old kiln (made possible
by the support of the Jerwood Foundation) will
retain the double height space, keeping as much
of the existing fabric as possible. It will be large
enough to accommodate groups of
instrumentalists, chamber and music theatre
rehearsals, and will be equipped for video/electro-
acoustic installations. 80 seats will be available
for an audience in a flexible configuration.

5. Rehearsal Studios
There will be two smaller fully sound-proofed
rehearsal studios on the ground floor.

6. Foyer and Artists Social Area
The new artist workspaces will be grouped
around a communal internal courtyard with
roof light and a social mezzanine area for
artists (to be named after Dame Janet Baker,
by the Foundation for Sport and Arts). On the
ground floor this central area will act as an information point and entrance foyer for the
general public and meeting place for those
using this new building.

7. Ancillary Spaces
Essential additional office space and
storage, including accessible toilets and
a small bar and kitchen.

We are moving ahead with the development
of some of the spaces originally earmarked
for future growth, which will hugely improve
the campus feel to the Aldeburgh Music site.
They include:

8. New Public Open Space
Creating a landscaped pedestrian area in
front of the Britten–Pears building by re-routing
the traffic going to the car park.

9. Dovecote Studio
Converting an old dovecote, now very dilapidated,
to provide a multi-arts studio suitable not only for
musicians but also writers and visual artists.

10. Artists Café / Meeting Place
Creating a café and meeting place for artists
and staff, overlooking the reeds, which will
enable informal creative encounters between
campus users.

11. Information Centre
Providing a public gateway for the Aldeburgh Music
campus by creating an information centre, which
will double as a box office and music shop.
