There have now been many projects that have taken place on the Carlford Unit, all based around arts and technology. The work is about enabling long-term skill-development, with each project building on the skills learnt in the previous one. Creativity and artistic decision-making are key, as is the aim of creating a high-quality educative experience that explores both process and product. Inmates are responsible for all aspects of projects, learning skills from facilitators who enable them to do the work for themselves. The work is leaving a rich legacy, both through skill-development of trainees and in terms of physical resources. Staff on the Unit are also involved in the planning and delivery of projects. The result is an integrated programme that avoids the ‘circus comes to town’ mentality, as activities can be continued once a project has finished. The commitment of staff has played a large part in the success of the work, and the resulting support and enthusiasm, from both staff and inmates, should be considered a real achievement in what is often seen as a difficult working environment for artists. The work is facilitating reintegration into the wider community through its links with young people at high schools, whilst also improving family and peer relationships. However, its predominant aim is to create high-quality, appropriate arts projects where process and product are of equal importance, in an environment where individuals are able to achieve their absolute best. The programme of work at Carlford Unit is fully integrated into the work of Aldeburgh in general and the education department in particular, drawing upon and maximising the distinct physical and artistic resource of the organisation and Snape Maltings Concert Hall. |
