July 2011: Making an album

Over 1 week all young people at HMP & YOI Warren Hill, Carlford Unit, worked together to produce an album.

The participants were split into three groups and rotated around three different activities which focused on different elements of producing an album. Each session was created and designed to introduce to the participants new skills, technology and approaches to creating music.

The sessions drew from and fed into each other and worked together to construct the album.

Session 1 - Production and Sequencing: The groups worked to create, produce and mix sequenced material using Logic 9.

Session 2 – Ambient and experimental: The groups produced a collection of original recordings utilizing natural objects around them. The sounds were then produced using Ableton Live.

Session 3 – Recording and instrumental: The groups worked to produce recorded material using tuned and un-tuned percussion, spoken word and singing.

October 2011

Over 1 week a group of musicians and 30 young people from HMYOI Warren Hill worked together to form two bands ready for a live music performance on the final day of the week.

The group of young people were split into a morning and afternoon group and were tasked with writing and performing new and original pieces of music to an audience of external guests and other young people at the prison.

The two groups were encouraged to look at different genres of music and to work with instruments that they may not have been familiar with – from orchestral percussion to steel pans.

The project developed and encourage teamwork, communication and performance skills.

February 2012

The final week-long project of this year took its inspiration from the format of the October project – Working with two groups of 20 young people and a group of musicians to create and perform new and original music.

This project looked at the meaning of words and lyrics and encouraged participants to think about meaning within music. The project incorporated body percussion and group singing.
