Aldeburgh Music has evolved into something much bigger than the original Festival created by Benjamin Britten. It is a unique meeting point for musicians of all ages, nationalities and genres, a place where artists reflect, collaborate and find inspiration. These three concerts give a glimpse of the diverse Aldeburgh musical landscape.
Alex Wilson offers a joyous fusion of musical worlds, Faster than Sound pioneers electronic-meets classical work and the Hebrides Ensemble present
highlights from their Aldeburgh Festival series. The best in new music, new musical encounters, the fostering of emerging talent – all the hallmarks of Britten’s Festival hold true today.
Thursday 11 November 7.30pm
Britten and Beyond
The outstanding Hebrides Ensemble plays Britten and three of the composers who succeeded him as Artistic Director of the Aldeburgh Festival. Shakespeare and Ovid colour music by Bridge, Britten, Knussen and Adès whilst Woolrich muses on musical ghosts: Monteverdi, Debussy and Schubert.
Friday 12 November 7.30pm
Alex Wilson: Mali Latino
A thrilling new sound from two musical worlds. Latin-Amercian rhythms meet the distinctive sounds and traditions of West Africa. Latin dance patterns and driving Malian village rhythms combine with instrumental virtuosity and the startling intensity of Mandigue and Afro-Cuban vocals.
Saturday 13 November 7.30pm
Faster Than Sound
Joining musical genres and digital artforms, Faster than Sound is a unique meeting place for classically trained and electronic musicians. The centrepiece is a new work by composer, inventor and educator Tod Machover (MIT Media Lab) plus new pieces by young composers and performers developed this week under Machover’s guidance.
