Well known to Snape audiences as a composer, performer and bandleader, Alex Wilson is a guarantee for danceable and innovative Latin jazz. His latest project, created on an Aldeburgh Residency, is that rarest of collaborations; a collision of two musical worlds that creates a genuinely new and thrilling sound.

Kora virtuoso Madou Sidiki Diabaté and Malian musicians join forces with a sensational nine-piece band to combine the essence of Afro-Cuban jazz with the exotic harmonies and ancient traditions of West-African music.

Expect fiery latin dance patterns mixed with the driving village rhythms of Mali, instrumental virtuosity on kora, piano and African percussion and the startling intensity of mandingue and Cuban vocals.

A truly world music project developed in Aldeburgh.

Mali Latino project

Madou Sidiki Diabaté and Alex Wilson met while on tour in 2004. A tune that featured strongly then was the traditional Mandingue melody, Remercier les travailleurs which Alex subsequently recorded.

Offered an Aldeburgh Residency to further develop a project with Madou, Alex travelled to Mali early in 2008, working with Madou and meeting Ahmed Fofana for the first time. Alex was immediately impressed by Ahmed’s musicality, facility on multiple instruments and deep knowledge of Mandingue music and traditions.

For five intense days at Aldeburgh in September 2008, the three musicians worked on the new project, based on a meeting of Latin and Mandingue traditions.
