Their journey will include focusing on the history of opera as well as compositional method, together with an in-depth look at the relationship between music and words.
Composer Anna Meredith, writer of Tarantula in Petrol Blue and recipient of a 2009 BBC Proms commission, will be joined by a team of singers and repetiteurs to help guide AYM composers and instrumentalists in creating their very own scenes for the stage.
Course outline
The idea of this course is to explore the process of what is involved in the creation of an ‘opera’ or music for the stage and we envisage that AYM will work in teams to create three short scenes. They will be writing and performing the music, working alongside two professional singers as ‘tools’ to use: Loré Lixenberg (Mezzo) and Paul Carey Jones (Baritone), as well as two repetiteurs: Andrew MacMillan and Kelvin Lim. Marcy Kahan (Librettist) has developed their initial ideas and we have invited director Martin Constantine to help them realise the overall vision!
The plot
Most narrative stories have an obstacle that someone or a group of people are trying to overcome (whether they succeed or not). The starting point for the plot has included the following themes: The Locked Door, The Secret, The Misunderstanding, Leaving Home, Owning Up, Waiting...., Moonlight, The Letter
