Britten A Birthday Hansel; Songs from the Chinese; Canticle V ‘The Death of St Narcissus’
Tippett Songs for Achilles
Walton Anon in Love

As a tribute to Peter Pears’ mastery, a programme of works written for him.

Tippett’s hero ruminates and rails, Walton’s protagonist by turns bellicose and tender. And then Britten – a beautifully measured foil to T.S. Eliot’s enigmatic poem, lucidly poised in texts from the Orient and charmingly melodic in the folk-like Scottish songs of his royal birthday tribute.

Two other virtuosos have left their mark on this programme – harpist Ossian Ellis and guitarist Julian Bream. Together, they have inspired songs that combine bewitching variety with alluring, thoroughly idiomatic writing for plucked strings.
