Edward Gardner conductor
Schubert/Berio Rendering Lutoslawski Symphony No.4
Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances
The acclaimed young music director of English National Opera makes his BPO debut in a programme of major 20th-century symphonic works.
Rachmaninov’s final score is a titanic vision of death and redemption in which even the rare orchestral voice of the alto saxophone finds a place.
Rendering is Berio’s masterly reworking of fragments surviving from Schubert’s 10th Symphony, while Lutoslawski’s Fourth, written at the time of the fall of Communism, creates an atmosphere of dreamlike beauty.
