Britten–Pears Orchestra
Vasily Petrenko conductor
Christian Gerhaher baritone
Wagner Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde
Mahler Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen
Shostakovich Symphony No.1
A genuine new star in British musical life and one of the world’s leading baritones both make their second Proms appearances this season.
Petrenko’s vitality and fresh thinking seem well-matched to the white heat and radical originality of the young Shostakovich. The composer’s stunning first symphony quotes Wagner, whose searing, passionate music from Tristan is one of the iconic works in musical history.
Emotional intensity and echoes of Wagner too in Mahler’s songs, small masterpieces etched with both deeply affecting melancholy and joyous, carefree simplicity.
