Britten Cello Sonata in A; Sonata in C op.65
Music inspired by musicians, brought by Aldeburgh regular Guy Johnston, praised for his ‘passion and intensity’ (The Strad), together with one of England’s finest young pianists, Leon McCawley.
Britten’s sonata was written for Rostropovich, and surely the great cellist influenced the work’s bold and agile lyricism. Debussy’s late masterpiece is
open-hearted, intricate music from a composer who captured the imagination of the youthful Britten, reflected in his own early unpublished sonata. At the programme’s heart, music by Britten’s mentor; short, charming character pieces set alongside the large-scale rhapsodic style of his Sonata.
