George Benjamin Palimpsests
Stravinsky Suite: The Firebird (1945)
Stravinsky’s unmistakable soundworld is both prelude and coda to two equally distinctive voices.
Boulez’s deconstruction of e e cummings’ text is complex but seductive whilst Benjamin’s musical palimpsest overlays a placid chorale with music of vigour, clarity and lyricism.
Stravinsky is lean and astringent in his four short character pieces, but lavish and exotic in a suite from the Russian fairy-tale ballet that propelled him to international recognition exactly a century ago.
An Aldeburgh and CBSO debut for British conductor Jonathan Nott, who has become a leading figure on the Continent.
