Adam Wiltshire designer

Thomas Linley The Duenna (in English)

An opera which created theatrical history, The Duenna was for 75 years the nation’s favourite and most successful opera, amassing the fortunes of Covent Garden. Sheridan’s own scandalous elopement with soprano Elizabeth Linley provided the story for which her father and brother (‘the English Mozart’) provided the music.

This authentic reconstruction of the only opera by the creator of The School for Scandal, features theatrical singers including Richard Suart, Nuala Willis, and a period instrument orchestra.

‘The Tommasino, as he is called, and the little Mozart, are talked of all over Italy, as the most promising geniusses of this age.’ Dr Charles Burney, 1770

English Touring Opera

This autumn, English Touring Opera bring a combination of two unusual masterpieces – one dating back to Mozart’s times, first performed in 1775; the other, a new work by acclaimed composer Alexander Goehr, former featured composer at the Aldeburgh Festival, based on Shakespeare’s King Lear.

‘All should cherish English Touring Opera, one of the most innovative companies in the country.’ The Observer
