Standing Wave: Mike Challis, Flat-e, Seeper, Simon Limbrick

Standing Wave

Standing Wave is a sound reactive light installation exploring the contrasting reflective states of water.

Specular reflection created by the perfect mirror-like surface of still water surrounds the space in uniform, almost motionless light. This state of tranquility is broken with the introduction of sound waves to the water, immediately altering its surface to produce diffuse reflections that create more random and chaotic light. Specific sound frequencies attempt to order these reflections by forcing the waters surface into patterns of standing waves. The water struggles to settle into a constant pattern, hinting at a stasis that is never achieved.

Created by Mike Challis, Flat-e, Seeper and Simon Limbrick

Education Room, Snape Maltings Concert Hall open daily throughout the Festival (times to be confirmed)

13-29 JUNE
Ana Maria Pacheco

Ana Maria Pacheco,
Shadows of the Wanderer
,
Sculpture, polychromed wood,
ca. 2.2m x 5m x 7m

The highlight of our focus on Ana Maria Pacheco is a major new sculptural group, Shadows of the Wanderer, which will be shown in the Big Shed, Stanny House Farm, Iken. In the Peter Pears Gallery, there will be a showing of Prints and Works on Paper and in the Pond Gallery, Artist's Books and Prints.

Ten over life-size figures crowd close together and stand as looming shadows behind a young man carrying an older man on his back. This new group recalls the tale of Aeneas, who carries his father Anchises from the ruins of Troy, but it also powerfully resonates with current issues, particularly the displacement of people.

To complement her Festival exhibitions, Ana Maria Pacheco will be in conversation with Colin Wiggins, Head of Education at the National Gallery, at the Jubilee Hall in Aldeburgh on Saturday 14 June (3pm-4.30pm). The event will also feature music specially chosen by Ana Maria, including works by Messiaen, Kurtág and Kaija Saariaho. Tickets are £10 (under 27s £5), available from Wednesday 26 March by calling the Box Office on 01728 687110.

Laurence Edwards: Creek Men

Laurence Edwards,
Creek Men

Creek Men is a fascinating exhibition which chronicles the year-long creative process behind the making and siting of three monumental bronze figures by the sculptor Laurence Edwards.

The giants, which can be seen during the Aldeburgh Festival floating on a large raft in the reed beds in front of Snape Maltings, were inspired by the ancient woodland, marshes and Saxon history of the coastal landscape between Aldeburgh and Sutton Hoo.

The exhibition includes photography and film of the sculptures being modelled in clay, impregnated with organic matter from the landscape, and cast in bronze by Edwards at his Butley Creek studio and foundry. It also follows their remarkable journey on the raft, by sea and river to Snape and their siting on the tidal mudflats. Notes, sketches and bronze studies reveal Edwards' deep interest in the natural, historical and cultural identity of the area.

Feelings: An installation by Rolf Wallin

Ever wanted to compose your own music? Don't know where to start? Don't worry. All you need to do is to sit down in a comfortable armchair, let a skilled assistant fasten electrodes to your head, relax and enjoy a short film specially designed to stimulate your brain activity. A computer converts your brainwaves into your very own music, using the revolutionary 'feelings' technology! The music is performed real-time on a self-playing piano, and you can purchase a CD of your work to take away.

Rolf Wallin is one of Norway's foremost composers and a consummate musician. He freely combines computer-generated systems and mathematical formulae. Feelings is an example of his playful, interactive approach. His composition The Age of Wire and String will be performed on 24 June.

Pond Gallery, Snape 2pm until 15 mins before evening performances at Snape
