Here are grand tableaux, sharply drawn characters and an extravagant, but dramatically taut score full of daring harmonic invention, masterly dramatic structure and an unfailing ability to get to the heart of a very universal human story. It calls for large orchestral forces and a theatrical approach from its cast – who better to present it than the young singers and period instruments of the Britten–Pears Programme under the direction of one of this country’s most respected Handelians.

Aldeburgh Music would like to pay tribute to the late Anthony Rolfe Johnson (1940 - 2010) for his generosity of time and spirit, by dedicating the BPO Snape Proms performance to the memory of this wonderful artist and teacher.
