Mahan Esfahani harpsichord
Bach Goldberg Variations
Iestyn Davies and Richard Egarr have had to withdraw from this concert. At short notice, harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani steps in to perform Bach's Goldberg Variations.
The work is a pinnacle of the keyboard repertoire and one of the most extraordinary achievements of the Baroque era - a brief and deceptively simple aria transformed by an epic set of 30 variations, packed with the extraordinary variety, invention, and imagination that are the hallmarks of Bach's genius.
Mahan Esfahani is making waves in the Early Music world. Still in his twenties, he is directing orchestras such as the Academy of Ancient Music and Manchester Camerata as well as forging a considerable reputation as a recitalist and chamber musician. A former member of the BBC New Generation Artists scheme, he opened this year's BBC Proms lunchtime chamber music series.
Of his Wigmore Hall debut last year, the Daily Telegraph exclaimed 'the harpsichord comes out of hiding ... magnificent'.
