Mendelssohn Paulus
Mendelssohn’s 'other' oratorio, St. Paul (Paulus) matches the more well-known Elijah for it's combination of fine uplifting choruses, the melodic beauty of it's arias, it's drama and inspirational moments such as the scene of conversion at Damascus. It is a vivid work, Handelian in concept and dressed up in the warm harmonic language of the Romantic era.

The University of Essex Choir was founded in 1977 and has a membership of about 150 singers drawn from staff and students of the University and from the local community. The choir performs two concerts a year and many of its Spring concerts are given at Snape. Recent acclaimed performances have included Bach’s B Minor Mass in 2006. The choir has also performed in the cathedrals at Norwich, Bury St. Edmunds and Chelmsford as well as at Canterbury and in Lille.
Since 1981 the Conductor has been Richard Cooke, Music Director of the Royal Choral Society and Conductor of Canterbury Choral Society.
The University has a relatively high proportion of foreign students and many of the students in the choir are from overseas, some of them singing in a choir for the first time.
