A Celebration of Schools'
Music: 9-14 March 2009
Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Suffolk
A Celebration of Schools' Music is a unique and exciting week of concerts at Snape Maltings Concert Hall in March each year, involving every state school in Suffolk.
It is one of the flagship projects of Aldeburgh Education, and apart from the Schools' Prom in the Royal Albert Hall it is the biggest event of this kind in the United Kingdom. The series was founded and developed in collaboration with the Suffolk County Music Service, with whom we work very closely.
Since 1988, Celebration has enabled self-selected schools to represent their chosen musical programmes during the week. Most participants practice and rehearse in their school drama room or school hall so are overwhelmed by the size and acoustic of the Concert Hall. For some it is their first visit to Snape Maltings and the experience is one that will stay with them for a long time. Audiences are at capacity, mostly composed of family members visiting the Concert Hall for the very first time. The performers are treated as professional artists: allocated dressing rooms, rehearsal slots, and have the full support of the stage staff, including our lighting and sound specialists.
A comprehensive teachers' resource pack is sent free of charge to all Suffolk state schools, exploring the theme of the year, giving a variety of starting points for composition and performance-based classroom activities. The theme for 2009 will be 'Music and the Mind'. Special needs schools participate on stage too, as the Concert Hall is fully accessible both in the public spaces, backstage and in the dressing rooms.
Special Projects that are showcased during the week are available for sponsorship. Trinity Guildhall will be principal sponsor for 2009; previous principal sponsors have included Barclays, Norwich & Peterborough Building Society and Kleenex.
