Open Space offers bespoke support for innovative and ambitious artists for up to two years. Through a series of artist-led residencies, the scheme offers the flexibility to explore and create new works, try out new collaborations and experiment with new ways of working, away from the pressures of everyday life as a professional musician. This unique opportunity allows participants to become part of the Aldeburgh Music family, to experience Aldeburgh’s creative campus on a regular basis and to make use of our expertise and vast array of contacts.
Each ensemble or individual is allocated a budget which can be used flexibly in discussion with the Open Space Administrator, for example to cover accommodation and travel or hire of equipment, or for external consultants - however, ideally this budget is not used to cover artist fees.
See current and past Open Space artists talk about their experiences of being on the programme:
Open Space comprises of two strands for Individuals and Ensembles:
An ensemble in residence scheme for emerging and new groups of different sizes and from different genres, with six ensembles each supported for up to two years. Open Space – Ensembles will provide time and space for groups to mature artistically, and will also offer performance experience through our programming when appropriate. A bespoke development programme will be devised with each group.
A residency scheme for an individual musician to develop a new innovative project. The project can be collaborative and involve musicians from any genre, or artists from any art form. We will accept three projects per year.
We’re particularly interested in hearing from artists with strong collaborative aspirations, who are willing to take risks and whose artistic ideas would benefit from an Open Space residency.
Applications for Open Space will re-open in autumn 2016.
