'Creative Training', 'Personal Development', 'Soft Skills' and 'Arts-based Training' are key concepts in the business world these days, as companies large and small strive to develop the potential of their staff in ever more imaginative ways. Enlightened companies are seeking more inclusive and creative models for staff development.
Against this background, Aldeburgh Music has generated its own initiative, Business Training at Snape, a bespoke music-based corporate professional training day, led by musicians specially trained as facilitators for business groups.
PRACTICAL PARTICIPATION
A typical Business Training at Snape day consists of the following: participants begin with a tour of the Concert Hall and its environs, with some background on its history. They then enter the Hall, listen to a brief performance by the professional players, before 'crossing the footlights' to become practical participants in creating and performing their own music, using a range of percussion instruments.

DEVELOPING SKILLS
The exercise builds essential skills in teamwork, listening, communication, confidence and creativity. Facilitated discussions throughout the day, led by the musicians themselves, are a key element in enhancing the learning experience and relating it to the workplace. The afternoon concludes with a performance on the Concert Hall platform, with appropriate lighting, of the work created.
REALISING CREATIVITY
Just as Snape is a place of energy and inspiration for music and the arts, it offers a similarly vital impulse for people from all walks of life. As one participant put it, 'from banking to Beethoven': even if the results aren't always Ludwig van B, a great deal is learnt about releasing personal creativity in the workplace!
'It was brilliant … Very professional … far more effective than normal training.'
