A musical conversation
A substantial new commission from one of the great figures in contemporary music is a thrilling prospect and a major Aldeburgh Festival milestone. That the composer plans to be here in person promises additional riches.
Elliott Carter discusses his music, the new commission and explores his piano work Matribute with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who recently gave its UK premiere.
What follows is a short performance of some of Carter’s other music for the instrument, a rare and concentrated half-hour sequence highlighting this most eloquent and distinctive of musical voices.
