The thrilling partnership of LPO and the daring, charismatic Vladimir Jurowski is one to cherish; here the team are joined by members of the Britten–Pears Orchestra following an Aldeburgh Residency.
Birtwistle’s Imaginary Landscape is an impressive, elementary one, whose features are hewn from vast opposing blocks of sound. Though separated by nearly three centuries, Stravinsky’s symphonies and Gabrieli’s antiphonal works for brass choir also seem to inhabit the same surroundings.
Elements of ritual and processional too, in Stravinsky’s piano concerto, but also a frenetic energy and in Steven Osborne, a soloist with verve and imagination to match the conductor’s.
Evening out: best available seat for the concert, food and a soft drink from the Oyster Bar with a reserved table, tea or coffee in the interval, £29.50.
