Haydn Quartet Op.20 No.1
Elliott Carter Quartet No.5; Oboe Quartet
Janácek Quartet No.2 ‘Intimate Letters’

Carter’s five string quartets have been hailed as distinguished a 20th-century cycle as those of Bartók and Shostakovich. They are a remarkable set of personal utterances, conversations amongst equals, where every instrumental character has a story to tell within the drama.

The fifth quartet’s fragments and interludes are set alongside two other contrasting but equally distinctive voices; the poise and invention of Haydn’s ‘Sun’ Quartet and Janácek’s bold and emotive outpouring, his last completed work.

Quatuor Diotima’s CD of Janácek string quartets recently received the ‘Diapason d’Or’.
