James Weeks director

Harrison Birtwistle Three Latin Motets from The Last Supper; Interludes from The Mask of Orpheus; On the Sheer Threshold of the Night
John Ward Come, sable night; Retire, my troubled soul
John Dowland Ayres of Four Parts

EXAUDI’s late-night programme explores Birtwistle’s enduring fascination with the Orphic myth in his monumental Boethius madrigal On the Sheer Threshold of the Night, and in the famous electronic interludes from his opera The Mask of Orpheus.

The Three Latin Motets from The Last Supper provide a haunting entrance to his saturnine sound-world, complemented by music from two great Elizabethan poets of melancholy, John Dowland and John Ward.

Pre-performance talk Patrick Wright discusses Birtwistle, Dowland and Melancholy

EXAUDI

EXAUDI is recognised as one of Britain’s most exciting young new music ensembles, with a reputation for audacious programming and high-definition performance of contemporary vocal repertoire.

Founded in 2002 by James Weeks (director) and Juliet Fraser (soprano), EXAUDI typically works as a consort rather than a choir – usually one voice to a part, ranging from three to sixteen voices – and draws inspiration for its sound from that of early music ensembles, a strong and focused tone that is ideal for the performance of harmonically intricate contemporary music.
